Beaches on the Big Island
Stunning Makalawena Beach at Pu’u Ali’I Bay in Kekaha Kai State Park
I am only going to mention a couple of beaches as The Big Island has so very many beautiful beaches. Some for walking, some for surfing, some for swimming and some for snorkeling. They are all so spectacular in different ways – green sand, black sand and white sand. Your options are endless. The walk at Hualālai along the ocean is always unbelievably pretty and we are rather content to see it every single day.

Kauna’oa (Mauna Kea) Beach – One of the prettiest white sand beaches in Hawaii! The snorkeling is great along the right side and I have swam with wonderful Manta Rays here too.
· Kekaha Kai State Park – This park has three main beaches – Manini’owali Bay (Kua Bay), Makalawena Beach at Pu’u Ali’I Bay and Mahai’ula Bay. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! There are a variety of ways you can hike into and through this area and plenty of information can be found online.
· Hapuna Beach – this was always a highlight for our three boys as the waves are plentiful and powerful. Beware of strong currents here! When our boys were small Dave & I had watchful eyes with our backs to the ocean as our guys used their boogies boards over and over.
Papakolea Green Sand Beach - A unique and special beach - The green sand is created by a common mineral in Big Island lava called olivine, which stays deposited on this beach because it is heavier than the other components of the lava.
